NSSLHA Chapter
We at the The University of Arizona have a very active chapter of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association, providing opportunities for all undergraduate and graduate students interested in learning about and engaging in educational, philanthropic and leadership activities. You can learn even more about this semester’s events by going to the UA NSSLHA website.
Over the past year, members of NSSLHA have spent several Saturday mornings packing boxes at the Community Food Bank. They have participated in the Students Supporting Brain Tumor Research Walk, the Walk for Better Hearing, and the Autism Walk. NSSLHA planned educational forums for community SLP’s and Audiologists. Fundraising activities have included bake sales, a coin drive, and a silent auction. NSSLHA ends each school year by planning a graduation brunch for those SLHS students who have completed their degrees.
Funds raised by NSSLHA have provided scholarships for students presenting at conferences, paid for tuition for students to attend educational workshops, and made donations to local, national and international philanthropic organizations.
One of the great NSSLHA programs is the M.A.P.S. mentoring program. This program was launched in the Fall of 2007 with several goals in mind: to raise awareness and provide information to students about opportunities in the areas of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, have educational experiences more accessible to students, help students navigate the graduate school application process, and provide a communication network among students.
