2012 Homecoming Open House and Ribbon Cutting

Was a stunning success! Over 60 Alumni, current and former faculty and staff, and community members attended continuing education and toured the new and renovated research and office space. SLHS faculty Drs. Mary Alt, Nicole Marrone and Leah Fabiano-Smith presented New Research Findings in Speech, Language, and Hearing Science. College of Science Dean Joaquin Ruiz cut the ceremonial ribbon for the new Brain Imaging Analysis Laboratory, the new Audiologic Research Laboratory and two behavioral testing rooms.

This renovation is the result of many years of planning and a partnership between the Department, the College and Central Administration and advances research throughout the department.

  • I am alive and living in San Francisco (with Albert), and working in Novato, CA in the public schools for my CFY. I miss the fabulous Voice Lab, the thunderstorms, and the cacti, but I don’t miss the 109 degree days!

  • Hello from Texas! I’ve been fortunate enough to work in our local school district first as a speech language pathologist, and now as a therapist and supervisor. I took 12 years off of working to raise my three children, when I went back to work I was amazed at how much of the information I learned at the U of A continued to help me, particularly as I looked at the research underpinning the techniques we use in therapy. Thanks!

  • I am excited to share this New York Times article with you! http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/02/health/02baby.html

I may not be using my SPHS degree to research or practice therapy, but I am trying to get some awareness and great products out on the market for kids! I am so excited that someone has finally stepped up to cover a topic in audiology!

  • Greetings from the Great White North! I am still working in the Anchorage School District providing direct services along with supervising and mentoring duties. I am contemplating retirement after 26 years in Alaska so this may be an extra exciting year for me. Best wishes to all my friends in Tucson and at the University of Arizona. I miss many of the seasoned professors who are no longer with the University now. I have such wonderful memories of them and the academic experience both here in Alaska and on campus in Tucson. Hope those of you who are presently on campus are having a great year.

  • Hello everyone, my husband and I are still in Alaska and our daughter is living in VA with her husband. I am currently the senior SLP for the Mat-Su Borough School District and in addition to providing services I supervise SLPAs. It was quite an honor being named an ASHA Fellow last year and in January I will begin my terms with ASHA’s Committee on Honors and as a member of the Steering Committee for Div 16. It has been a long time since I was in Tucson and am hoping to come by for a visit in the near future. Have a great year!

  • Greetings from a December, 1981 Bachelor’s degree graduate. This might be my first update…
I got an MS in Audiology from Idaho State U. (Pocatello) in 1984 and worked in Phoenix (first at a hearing aid office, then in the state school hearing program, and did some work in industrial hearing/noise consulting). In 1990 I left Audiology to attend Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley; graduated in 1994 and was ordained to serve a Lutheran congregation in Orange County, California for 6 years. In 2000 I moved to Flagstaff to serve another congregation until 2007. Many times in those congregations my Speech/Audiology knowledge was useful. Desiring a change, I was accepted in the fall of 2007 into a year-long Chaplain Residency (not unlike a doctor’s residency–w/long hours of intensive study/hands on learning) at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon. My two primary rotations were in Pediatrics and at The Oregon Burn Center (with sub-rotations in step-down and trauma units). My life came full circle through this experience–encompassing my EMT experience (I did ambulance work while taking undergrad classes), my SLHS knowledge, and ministry. After a 10 month search I accepted a position as a chaplain with Hospice Compassus of Sedona and Flagstaff. I work about 30 hours/week, and use Speech and Audiology training almost daily. A fair number of patients have some form of dementia as a primary diagnosis, or secondary to something else. When I’m able, I learn as much as I can about the dementia diagnoses I encounter. Many patients also have hearing issues, some as simple as a poorly inserted hearing aid. My SLHS knowledge seems more important than ever. My wife and I just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary, and our children are ages 17 and 13. After leaving U of A, I connected with a few classmates until leaving Audiology. Since then I reconnected with one (my first congregation was in her “hometown”) and we exchange an occasional e-mail.

  • When I graduated in 1967 my degree was in Speech Arts, as in Readers’ Theatre. Our claim to fame was producing Archibald MacLiesh’s “Trojan Women”and “This Music Crept By Me Upon the Waters” directed by Dr. Virginia Floyd. We received a letter from Mr. MacLeish a few weeks later and he told us that we performed “This Music…” “…as he heard it in his inner when he wrote the play.” He gave a literary address at UofA the next evening. This was in the fall of 1966. Pretty heady experience for a young junior!

  • Howdy y’all. Well after being gone from Tucson for the past 34 years, my wife and i are moving back. A very good friend (not exactly an “old” friend since she is younger than me) has offered me a job running her Green Valley office. I’ll be starting Sept 1st. thanks Janis!
