Overview
Nicole Marrone, Ph.D., CCC-A holds the James S. and Dyan Pignatelli/Unisource Clinical Chair in Audiologic Rehabilitation for Adults at the University of Arizona and is an Associate Professor of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. Her research investigates hearing loss and rehabilitation in adults. Her speciality is how interventions, including hearing aids and group audiologic rehabilitation, can improve people’s quality of life and communication in everyday environments.
Part of Dr. Marrone’s research focuses on increasing access to hearing healthcare in rural communities. This interdisciplinary work is in collaboration with faculty in the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, as well as with community health providers at the Mariposa Community Health Center in Nogales, Arizona. Dr. Marrone and her collaborators were recently awarded a phased innovation grant (R21/R33) from NIH/NIDCD for this work: “Reducing Disparities in Access to Hearing Healthcare on the U.S.-Mexico Border” (R21DC013681). Pilot funding for the project came from a UA Foundation Community Connections grant.
Dr. Marrone incorporates service-learning projects into her courses taught at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. These projects have benefitted from partnerships with community organizations, including Arizona Hands and Voices, The City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department, and the Adult Loss of Hearing Association. Dr. Marrone was awarded a community grant from the national SERTOMA Foundation to support the development of service-learning in hearing coursework at The University of Arizona.
Dr. Marrone is originally from St. Paul, Minnesota. She worked as a clinical audiologist at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary prior to receiving her Ph.D. from Boston University in 2007. After a postdoctoral fellowship at Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., Dr. Marrone joined the faculty at The University of Arizona in 2011. She and her family are acclimating happily to life in Tucson, enjoying the sunny skies, the beauty of the desert, and finding the people to be as warm as the temperatures in the Southwest.
