Advanced Clinical Assistant Program (ACAP)

The Advanced Clinical Assistant Program (A-CAP) in the University of Arizona Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic is designed for seniors who have successfully completed CAP and are ready for greater clinical responsibility.

Through A-CAP, students may earn direct clinical hours under the supervision of clinical faculty.

Eligibility

To apply, you must:

  • Be a senior SLHS major
  • Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Have earned an A in a previous CAP experience
  • Obtain a recommendation from your prior CAP clinical instructor
  • Waive your right to review the faculty recommendation

What Will I Do?

As an A-CAP student, you may:

  • Assist with session preparation
  • Participate in therapy planning
  • Provide supervised intervention
  • Document client progress
  • Develop early clinical competencies

Responsibilities vary based on placement and client needs. Specific expectations will be outlined in a meeting with your clinical supervisor.

Students are responsible for tracking clinical hours using the Undergraduate Clinical Clockhours form.

When are placements available?

CAP placements are offered in:

  • Fall
  • Spring

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Space is limited.
Priority is given to seniors.

How do I apply?

  1. Before submitting your application:
  2. Complete HIPAA training in Edge Learning (UAccess) and save your certificate.
  3. Download your unofficial transcript from UAccess.
  4. Review the Clinic Dress and Demeanor Policy.

      

  5. Determine your semester availability.
  6. Complete the application  (Qualtrics survey).  

When will I hear that I have been accepted for A-CAP?

You will receive an email during the first week of the semester to confirm your acceptance.

What will I Be registered for?

Students accepted into A-CAP will be registered for:

SLHS 458 (SLP) or SLHS 459 (Audiology) – 1 credit unit

This course credit reflects your supervised clinical experience and direct clinical hours earned through the Advanced Clinical Assistant Program.
