Dr. Kathryn A. Bayles joined the faculty at the University of Arizona in 1985. She emerged as a leading contributor to the area of cognitive-communication disorders in individuals with Alzheimer disease. Her innovative work was funded by the National Institutes on Aging, Mental Health, Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, the Andrus and Robert Wood Johnson Foundations and the Alzheimer's and Related Disorders Association. Widely published in peer reviewed journals, Dr. Bayles has authored four books and two standardized tests.

Pélagie (Pagie) Beeson was a Professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, with a joint appointment in the Department of Neurology. Her clinical and research interests include the study of the language and cognition in healthy adults and those with acquired neurogenic communication disorders.  In particular, Dr. Beeson studies a) the cognitive processes that support spoken and written language, b) the treatment of aphasia, acquired alexia and agraphia, and c) issues related to long-term rehabilitation of aphasia.  Dr.

Daniel R. Boone received his bachelor’s degree in speech pathology from University of Redlands in 1951. He subsequently studied and received both a MA (1954) and Ph.D. (1958) from Western Reserve University in Cleveland. For the first 20 years of his professional career, Dr. Boone was active clinically and in research with various neurogenic disorders (aphasia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson disease). With the success of his voice text, The Voice and Voice Therapy, Boone devoted the last 40 years of his career to voice disorders and treatment.

Dr. Richard Curlee arrived at the University of Arizona in 1975 as the program was building strength as a research- emphasis university. Having earned his BA from Wake Forest University (1961) and his MA and PhD from the University of Southern California (1965; 1967), Dick quickly emerged as a leader in the field. He served as Associate Secretary for Research and Scientific Affairs for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association from 1971 to 1975. The University of Arizona was fortunate that Dr. Curlee spent nearly his entire academic career here.

Anthony B. DeFeo was Clinic Director for the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences for over 25 years. He received his undergraduate degree from Montclair St. College, where he studied speech pathology as well as theater. His passion for helping people led him to Northwestern University, where he received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Speech and Language Pathology. He joined the faculty at the University of Arizona in 1981.

Dr. Ted Glattke was Professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences from 1973 until he retired in 2007. He was an internationally recognized scientist known for his broad knowledge of hearing science, and specifically for his contributions to the physiologic evaluation of the auditory and vestibular systems. Many students remember Dr. Glattke for his excellence in teaching anatomy and physiology of the auditory mechanism, as well as the fundamentals of instrumentation for speech and hearing sciences. Dr. Bill Hodgson was Professor at the University of Arizona from 1971- 1994.  Dr. Hodgson was a leader in the fields of audiometry, audiologic evaluation, rehabilitation and amplification.  He authored multiple articles and books, including two seminal books:  The Handbook of Adult Rehabilitative Audiology and Basic Audiologic Evaluation. He was honored as Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Audrey Holland, Ph.D., CCC/SLP, BC-ANCDS, was Regents’ Professor Emerita of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at The University of Arizona. Dr. Holland was a world-renowned researcher, author, and speaker in the area of aphasia. Over the course of her career, she served on some of the most prestigious and influential bodies, including the Advisory Council for the US National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders (NIH) and the US Department of Veterans’ Affairs Advisory Committee on Prosthetics and Special Disabilities. Dr. Frank Musiek retired from the University of Arizona in 2023.  The NeuroAudiology Lab will reflect reduced academic/research activity but will remain active. Overview

Linda received her Bachelor’s degree from The University of WI-Madison, her Master’s degree from Denver University and her PhD from The University of AZ. She joined the University of Arizona Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences in 2002 after completing post-doctoral training at the University of Arizona in the Speech Perception Laboratory.

Dr. Ralph Shelton was Professor of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at the University of Arizona from 1970 to 1998, when he retired. He had a distinguished career as an international leader in the field of speech-language pathology, with major contributions in the areas of articulation, cleft palate, and craniofacial disorders. He was an early proponent of “evidence-based practice” long before the term was in vogue, and taught us all to think, to evaluate, and to question. He was a lovable critic, an endearing skeptic, and a lifelong learner.
