Tinnitus Management Program

Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the ears or head in the absence of an external source. It is often described as a ringing, but it also can sound like roaring, clicking, hissing, or buzzing. Tinnitus is not a disease; it is a symptom that something has affected the auditory system (i.e., ear, auditory nerve that connects the inner ear to the brain, and the parts of the brain that process sounds).

The underlying triggers for tinnitus are as varied as people’s individual experience of it. It can be the result of a number of health conditions, such as:

  • Noise-induced hearing loss;
  • Ear wax or other foreign objects that block the eardrum;
  • Head or neck trauma;
  • Middle ear disorders;
  • Medications; anti-inflammatory drugs, quinine and chemotherapeutic agents etc.;
  • Psychological concerns such as depression and anxiety;
  • Systemic disorders including hormonal changes, diabetes, anemia, thyroid dysfunction, vascular disorders, aneurysms, high or low blood pressure; and
  • Acoustic Neuroma.

If you suffer from tinnitus, you may have heard from many different professionals that there is no “cure” for tinnitus or that there is nothing that can be done about it. While there may not be a cure for tinnitus, there are a variety of tinnitus management options that can improve your quality of life and minimize the impact of tinnitus on your everyday experience.

Our Tinnitus Management program includes a comprehensive assessment and interpretation of data, counseling, education, and service planning with the goal of providing effective tinnitus coping strategies.
