L4 Lab: Language, Learning, Literacy, Lexicon

Explore the L4 Lab website!

Faculty Director: Mary Alt, PhD, CCC-SLP

Key Personnel: Nora Evans-Reitz, MS, CCC-SLP (Project Director); Cecilia Figueroa, MS (Project Director)

Location: SLHS Room 322

Research Focus: The L4 Lab’s research is centered on answering this question: How do people learn words and the concepts associated with those words? The answers to this question are fundamental to our understanding of language development and disorders of language and learning. We examine the cognitive underpinnings of language learning (e.g., working memory), investigate how we can apply principles of statistical learning to word learning treatments, and explore learning in different populations including bilingual learners, late talkers, children with developmental language disorder, and dyslexia. We are interested in extending findings from our lab into clinically driven research and in partnering with the community to engage in implementation science.

Student Roles: The L4 Lab is a very busy lab! There are many projects where we may be able to use your help, depending on your interests and the current needs of the specific studies. There are also many ways to participate (including in-person and remote options).

Student Representative: Haley Hinrichs has been in our lab since 2023, working on VAULT in various roles. She's happy to answer your questions about being part of our lab. Contact her at hmhinrichs@arizona.edu.
