Overview

Janet L. Hawley received her BA in Speech and Hearing Sciences from the University of California, Santa Barbara, her MS from the University of Arizona, and her clinical doctorate (ClinScD) from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. Her expertise lies in the clinical management of neurogenic communication disorders in adults, including treatment of communication-cognitive deficits in traumatic brain injury, language impairment due to aphasia, and speech disorders from progressive neurological diseases, particularly primary progressive aphasia. She has a passion for transgender voice, as well as the assessment and treatment of voice disorders (e.g. the LSVT program). Additionally, she specializes in accent modification and developed a course for UA students, staff, and professors who desire modification of their accent. In the past, Dr. Hawley worked in medical settings and served as a manager of an interdisciplinary brain injury treatment program. Currently Dr. Hawley’s greatest love is working in the clinic with graduate clinicians where she coordinates the Aphasia Program and facilitates off-campus practicum placements (adult agencies and medical settings) for graduate speech-language pathology students. In addition to chairing the department’s graduate student awards committee, she also serves as the privacy officer for the SLHS department and participates in UA’s HIPAA advisory committee.
