Faculty Directors: Brad Story, PhD and Kate Bunton, PhD, CCC-SLP

Key Personnel: None

Location: SLHS Room 307

Research Focus: Research in the Speech Acoustics and Physiology Laboratory is focused on understanding how the physical shapes and sizes of both the voice source and the vocal tract contribute to the sound of the human voice and perception of speech. We use tools such as speech acoustics, kinematic (movement) measures, and speech simulation in conjunction with perceptual experiments, and volumetric imaging of the vocal tract in our research.

Research activities in SAPL are focused on the following areas:

  • Speech acoustics and articulation
  • Acoustic phonetics
  • Volumetric imaging of the vocal tract
  • Speech simulation/synthesis
  • Respiratory kinematics of speaking and swallowing
  • Aeromechanical measures of velopharyngeal function

Student Roles: Running perceptual experiments and completing acoustic analyses

Student Representatives: Tyler Schnoor and Song Yi Kim
