Clinical Assistant Program (CAP)

The Clinical Assistant Program (CAP) in the University of Arizona Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic gives undergraduate SLHS students hands-on experience in our campus clinic. Learn more about Advanced CAP (A-CAP) and eligibility requirements

Through CAP, you can:

  • Explore speech-language pathology or audiology
  • Earn supervised observation hours toward certification
  • Gain practical clinical experience before graduate school

Eligibility

To apply, you must:

  • Be a junior or senior SLHS major at the University of Arizona
  • Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher

What Will I Do?

As a CAP student, you may:

  • Prepare materials and set up for sessions
  • Observe client sessions
  • Record clinical data during sessions
  • Serve as a conversation partner during sessions
  • Plan and lead 1–2 client activities near the end of the semester

Important: Responsibilities vary by placement and client needs. Your specific expectations will be reviewed with your clinical instructor at the start of the semester.

When Are Placements Available?

CAP placements are offered in:

  • Fall
  • Spring

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Space is limited.
Priority is given to seniors.

How do I apply?

Before completing the application, you must:

  1. Complete HIPAA training in Edge Learning (UAccess) and save your certificate (PDF or image).
  2. Download your unofficial transcript from UAccess Student enter.
  3. Review the Clinic Dress and Demeanor Policy

  4. Decide:
    • Which semester you are applying for
    • Your availability for that semester
    • Whether you are applying for Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology
  5. Complete the official application (Qualtrics form).
     

When is the application deadline?

  • Spring placement → Apply by May 1
  • Fall placement → Apply by December 1

When will I hear that I have been accepted for A-CAP?

You will receive an email during the first week of the semester to confirm your acceptance.

What will I be registered for?

Students accepted into CAP will be registered for:

SLHS 458 (SLP) or SLHS 459 (Audiology) – 1 credit unit

This course credit reflects your supervised clinical experience and direct clinical hours earned through the Advanced Clinical Assistant Program.

Students who successfully complete CAP may apply for the Advanced Clinical Assistant Program (A-CAP), which allows seniors to earn direct clinical hours under faculty supervision.
