Leah Fabiano-Smith Awarded NIH R01 Grant to Study Speech Sound Disorders in bilingual children

We congratulate SLHS Associate Professor Leah Fabiano-Smith on being awarded a National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01 grant for her project, Assessment of Speech Sound Disorders in Latino Preschoolers: An Evidence-Based Procedure. This five-year research grant will fund the development of an evidence-based assessment procedure for bilingual Spanish-English speaking preschoolers with suspected speech sound disorders. This research will take into account both the languages of the bilingual child to achieve a high level of diagnostic accuracy, thereby reducing the rate of misdiagnosis in this population. The result of this work will be a quick and easy-to-administer evaluation protocol that takes into consideration bilingual children's speech sound abilities in both of their languages.
