Research Focus: Dr. Kotlarek’s lab investigates the relationship between velopharyngeal anatomy, surgical approach, and speech phenotype to optimize early functional health outcomes in children with craniofacial differences. Research in Dr. Kotlarek’s lab also aims to understand clinical training needs for current and future speech-language pathologists and improve the quality and continuity of care for individuals with cleft palate.
Our Research Includes:
- Magnetic resonance imaging
- Speech and velopharyngeal function
- Speech outcomes following cleft palate repair
- Feeding infants with cleft palate
Student Roles: Data collection, speech analysis, imaging analysis, literature reviews, and other research assistance

Prerequisites: Interest in cleft palate and craniofacial differences, coursework in head/neck anatomy (SLHS 261 or other)
